Cutting
Yes, the following should be considered general rules of thumb:
Soft Paper: 19-20 degree angle with low clamp pressure
Regular Paper: 23-24 degree angle with medium clamp pressure
Hard Paper: 30-degree angle with higher clamp pressure
For more information, read Trimmer Knife Lifespan for Guillotine Paper Cutters article.
Yes. The following should be considered general rules of thumb:
Standard Steel Knife Blade: Replace after 8 hours of operation
High-Speed Steel Inlaid: Replace after 16 hours of operation
Carbide Knife: Replace after about 160 hours of operation

Using the correct thickness for the corner rounder's die, emptying the waste tray, only cutting the correct material, and keeping the blades sharp and new are all critical for optimal functionality. Read more about corner rounder tips here.
Drilling
Yes. Update Ltd carries Drill Ease Wax for lubrication that will prolong the life of your drill. See our Drilling Tips for Optimal Production article for more drilling tips.

Update Ltd offers the CHT process for many drills, stitcher parts, perforators, slitters and cutting tools. Read more about Update Ltd's CHT process here.
A standard steel finish may work best with uncoated, standard stock while CHT drills work best on laminated or coated paper stocks. Consider fluted drills for harder stocks and marvel style drills for thicker stocks and plastics. Read more about best drill options for specific paper finishes.
Set the drill depth so it just cuts the bottom sheet. There is no need to cut deeply into the cutting stick. See our Drilling Tips for Optimal Production article for more drilling tips.

Glue
Glue Dots are a double-sided, pressure-sensitive adhesive that bond instantly to virtually any surface.
Glue Dots come in different strengths, shapes, and sizes, with either removable or permanent adhesive. Users love them for their clean, quick application and versatility in the binding industry.
Cost, waste amount, durability, and even health concerns are considerations when making this decision. See our EVA Binding vs. PUR Binding blog for more information.
Update Ltd provides a number of spine glues including PUR adhesive and a number of hot melt choices. See our How to Create Durable Softcover Books Blog for more information.
Press the item to be adhered against the Glue Dot and peel away. Press the item onto the intended surface.
Avoid touching Glue Dots with your fingers as dust and oils will compromise the bond.
Glue Dots can also be applied with one of our convenient adhesive applicators. We have manual dispensers, and handheld semiautomatic applicators like the Dot Shot Pro.
This will depend on the amount of stress the bond is under. We want your Glue Dots to be successful, so let’s talk about your purpose and specific situation. In some cases, our Research and Development Department may develop a custom adhesive, especially for your application. If this is a concern for you, contact us for more information.

We want your Glue Dots to be successful, so let’s talk about your purpose and specific situation. In some cases, our Research and Development Department may develop a custom adhesive especially for your application.
In cases where unusual shapes or materials are used, or the bond is under a great deal of stress, a custom pattern may be necessary.
Custom patterns may be necessary in cases where unusual shapes or materials are used, or when the bond is under a great deal of stress.
We get many orders for custom Glue Dot patterns, and your Distributor or a Glue Dots Representative can advise you on the best product for your needs. We’re experts at determining whether your situation calls for a custom pattern. However, we have your best interests in mind and will not sell you something you don’t need.
The short answer is yes.
As the end-user, you are the best judge of the bond strength required for your application.
We offer low, medium, high, and super high tack. What you need will depend on the pressure the bond will experience. We can assist you in determining the best product for your needs by supplying you with a variety of samples to test. Contact us for more information.
"Tack" refers to the aggressiveness of the adhesive, while “profile” refers to thickness.
Low tack dots are removable. On most surfaces, high and super high tack Glue Dots would be permanent.
Low profile dots are flat compared to high profile dots, which are 1/8" thick. Medium and high profile dots are best suited for round, concave or irregularly shaped objects.
A larger surface contact gives you a stronger bond.
Your choice will depend on the size/surface area of the materials you are adhering but there is a direct correlation between the amount of surface contact and the overall strength of the bond. 1/2" diameter dots (as well as several Glue Shapes) are designed for maximum surface area contact. Even that ¼” makes a notable difference in strength.
Your best step toward a strong bond is to make sure all surfaces are clean and dry.
Moisture, oils, dust, lotions and some silicone-coated products may interfere with the bonding quality. If you are using an applicator, focus while you’re getting it going so you can make sure it’s functioning as it should.
Glue Dots adhere to a wide variety of materials.
Glue Dots adhere to a wide variety of materials, including paper, plastic, foil, glass, aluminum, Styrofoam, wood, and PTFE.
If the substrates you're working with are questionable, contact us at 877.512.8086. They may require a custom shape or a specific tack and profile to give you an optimal bond.
Yes, Glue Dots are one of the safest adhesive options out there and are completely non-toxic.
Glue Dots are also odorless, FDA-approved for direct or indirect food contact and conform to ASTM D-4236. Unlike hot glue guns, there's no risk of incurring serious burns.

The CHT process, which is completely unique to Update Ltd, is a value-added service offered to provide longer-lasting parts. CHT, which stands for chemicals, heat and time, are three variables that, when combined, help to enhance the wear of your products, promising more effective and durable parts. CHT can come in a number of different coatings, such as Teflon, titanium nitride, chrome finish, and carbide sputter, which can be applied to equipment or products of various materials. CHT is most suited for drills, stitcher parts, perforators and slitters and cutting tools.
Not only does the CHT process help drills run cooler, but it helps prevent clogging as well. The core of paper removed or drilled out, commonly referred to as a chad or plug of paper, can get clogged inside the drill. The CHT coating lowers the coefficient of friction, thus helping in preventing a clog and speeds up the drilling process as well.
Stitching
You will need to know the number of staples per book and the number of books for the job being quoted.
The standard length of each staple is one inch, and usually each book requires two staples. Using the number of books for your quoted job, use our equations below to calculate how many pounds of wire you will need.
(2 inches per book) x (amount of books) = total inches of wire(total inches of wire) / (inches per spool) = amount of spools
(total inches of wire) / (inches per pound) = amount of pounds
If you find deposits around your stitcher head, it may not be the stitcher head itself that is being damaged – it could also be from the wire.
Take a magnet and see if the magnet picks up these flakes. If they’re magnetic, then that means the wire is being scraped and therefore the coating of the wire is being damaged. Trace it back from the spool to the stitcher head and look for any areas where the wire may be rubbing or scraping and adjust the part. Do not forget to keep your wire and your stitcher head well oiled, with the correct lubricant for your machine.
No, usually the stitcher head just needs a simple adjustment.
One thing you can do is adjust the wire curl on your stitcher head to create a more consistent feed of the wire to eliminate the problem. Try this first before assuming it is a larger problem. You can always give us a call as well if your stitcher head refuses to stitch smoothly.
Oiling your wire regularly will keep it at optimal performance, especially at higher speeds.
Use a 10 W30 oil on the felt pads of the head and apply oil on the wire itself. Be careful you do not over-oil, so that the product remains at top quality. If you’re having other maintenance issues with your wire, make sure it is a quality product that is the right fit for your machine..
Yes, you should expect your stitcher head to need regular maintenance, and we repair them on-site with a general turnaround of 2-3 days.
